What can and can’t a learner driver do in the UK?

10/09/2019

From taking a look at the public’s Google searches of ‘can a learner driver…’ we can see that there’s a lot of confusion surrounding what a learner driver can legally do in the UK. Although some of these may seem obvious, the sheer number of people who have been asking Google shows that they’re not - so we thought we’d take the opportunity today to dispel some of the myths and misunderstandings that exist about learner drivers.

1. Can a learner driver carry passengers? (particularly children)

Yes, learner drivers holding a provisional license can legally carry passengers of any ages. That being said, it’s not advisable to fill your car with passengers on your first few outings with your supervisor, as they could prove a distraction and limit your vision.

2. Can a learner driver drive at night?

Yes, a learner driver is allowed to drive at any hour of the day or night. In fact, practicing driving in both daylight hours and in the dark is encourages, to prepare yourself for some of the challenges that different driving conditions pose.

3. Can a learner driver drive on the motorway?

Yes, learner drivers can take lessons on the motorway. This a very new rule just coming into place last month (June 2018), with the aim of preparing learners more fully for driving on motorways once they’ve passed their test. There are some rules for this – learners must be with a qualified driving instructor, and the car must be fitted with dual controls for the safety of all motorway users.

4. Can a learner driver drive alone?

No, a learner driver with a provisional license can’t drive a car alone. Until they’ve passed their driving test they must be accompanied by a licensed driver over the age of 21, who has had their license for at least 3 years.

5. Can a learner driver tow a trailer?

No, a learner driver with a provisional car license may not tow a trailer, even if accompanied by someone who is licensed to tow it.

We hope we’ve helped to clear up some of the confusion surrounding learner drivers, and you can go forwards with a clearer understanding of what is and isn’t legally allowed.
