How to become an approved driving instructor (ADI)
11/09/2019
There are many benefits to becoming an approved driving instructor (ADI). From the strong sense of work satisfaction to the flexible working hours and the freedom of being your own boss.
There are a few steps you need to take before you can become a fully qualified ADI.
Firstly, you can find out at gov.uk whether you are able to become a driving instructor.
Step 1: ADI theory test
This is the first of three exams you need to pass in order to become a driving instructor. The ADI theory test includes hazard perception and multiple choice questions. In order to pass the ADI theory test you need to answer 85 out of 100 questions correctly, including questions on road procedures, car control, mechanical knowledge and driving law. You then will need to score 57 out of 75 to pass the hazard perception test.

How to Pass the ADI Exams
You can take your ADI Theory Test as many times as you like but you must pass all three ADI exams within a two-year period.
Step 2: ADI part two
Part two of your ADI test is the practical examination that tests your driving ability. It includes an eyesight test and car safety questions.
You can have three attempts at passing the second ADI test. Once passed you will be able to apply for a trainee driving instructor licence to help you prepare for part three of the exams.
Step 3: ADI part three
The final of the three tests will examine your ability to instruct pupils on how to drive.
During this test your examiner will fall into the role of two different types of pupils from beginner to an already qualified development pupil. The three areas of this test will include core competencies, instructional techniques and instructional characteristics.
** The part three exam will be changing next year to bring it in line with changes to the ADI check test. We are currently preparing new materials to be introduced as the changes to the part three test are phased in.
